Tribute to Vulture

Post  Casey on Sun 21 Aug 2011, 07:31

We came home one day to find a box at our door with a small fully feathered baby common grackle inside. We took him in, unsure of who even left him there. Upon looking him over and setting up a cage in the bathroom for him (room away from cats and other birds) we found that he was dehydrated, starved, and had a half healed broken leg (upper thigh was broken but healed a little crooked). We fed him, weaned him onto insects that he would find in the wild and some fruits and veggies. We taught him to forage for his food instead of always having it in the dish once he was able to walk better. We hid blueberries at the bottom of the cage that he had to dig for like he would in the wild grass. we placed fishflies on his perches that he would have to catch himself and find. he soon became an expert and grew well, only he did not know how to fly yet. his leg had slowed that process and i would not let him out to fly until he was able to use his leg completely. His leg had healed slightly crooked but it did not slow him or bother him. we taught him to fly and then we had released him once he was able to get far on his own. We miss him but I have seen him a few times. I know his ragged tail anywhere lol

From when we got him to when we released him through our livingroom window

This is a similar story, unfortunately the end is different;
My kids found this little bird in the yard and they took her.

She likely fell from his nest.
She was many dehydrated and starved.

when she grew I decided to give her the freedom.
After few months, while I was going to work, I found "Gilda" (it is her name) in the grass of my garden.
She cried and was sat on the ground.
I picked her and i brought her in my home.
I checked that she didn't bleed.
There wasn't tracks of blood however she seemed injured.
I watched her for few minutes and after I realized that she just had been attacked by others madgies.
The tail feathers sounded like if they were pulled since the feathers had been deflecting.
The leg seemed that it had been injured but luckily it didn't appear broken but after few days she got lost the thumb toe.
Now Gilda lives with us since she is not able to face the wild nature..

Magpies are gorgeous birds. Yeah this one seems to have been accepted by his kind so I am very glad about that.
